Do I Need Trailer Brakes and a Brake Controller in Colorado?
In Colorado, any trailer with a gross weight of 3,000 lb or more must have its own brakes (C.R.S. 42-4-223). Every trailer in our fleet — from the 7,000 lb GVWR utility to the 14,000 lb equipment trailer — has electric brakes, so your tow vehicle needs a working brake controller and a standard 7-way connector at pickup.
What does Colorado law actually require?
Colorado statute C.R.S. 42-4-223 requires every trailer or semitrailer with a gross weight of 3,000 pounds or more to be equipped with brakes that the driver can apply, and combinations must be able to stop within statutory distances. In practice: every rental trailer in our fleet is at or above that line, every one of them has electric brakes on its axles, and the brakes only work if your tow vehicle can send them a signal. That's the brake controller's job.
What is a brake controller and do I already have one?
A brake controller is the module in your tow vehicle that applies the trailer's electric brakes — proportionally with your pedal, plus a manual override lever. Many late-model trucks with a factory tow package have one built into the dash (look for a "Trailer Brake" gain readout when the trailer is plugged in). If your truck has a 7-way round connector but no integrated controller, an aftermarket unit installs near the steering column. Set the gain loaded: at about 25 mph on an empty road, squeeze the manual lever — the trailer should tug firmly without locking tires.

Why do brakes matter more on the Front Range?
Altitude and grade. Colorado Springs sits above 6,000 ft, and the descents that surround it — Ute Pass on US-24, Monument Hill on I-25 — are long enough to cook an unbraked combination's brakes. Trailer brakes share that heat load, and the manual override lets you settle a trailer that starts to sway in a chinook gust. Engine braking does the rest: gear down before the grade, not on it. What happens at pickup?
We hook up with you: coupler seated and latched, safety chains crossed, breakaway cable to the tow vehicle (not the hitch ball), 7-way plugged in, then a light-and-brake check before you leave the yard. It takes five minutes and it's how we'd send out our own trucks. Quick answers before you book
My SUV has a 4-pin flat connector. Can I still rent?
Not as-is for our trailers — electric brakes need the 7-way round connector, which carries the brake signal and 12V charge line. A 4-to-7 adapter alone doesn't add a brake controller; you'd need a controller installed. Call us at 719-661-3946 and we'll help you sort out what your vehicle needs.
What is the breakaway cable for?
It's the small cable that applies the trailer's brakes automatically if the trailer ever separates from the hitch. Colorado requires trailers in this class to have a breakaway system. Clip it to the tow vehicle's frame or hitch loop — never around the ball — and we'll check it at pickup.
Do trailer brakes work in snow and ice?
Yes, and they matter more there. Set the controller gain lower on slick roads so the trailer tires don't lock, leave triple the following distance, and remember Colorado's traction law can apply to your tow vehicle on winter highways.
Can I rent a brake controller from you?
We don't rent controllers — they have to be wired into the tow vehicle. Factory tow packages usually include one, and aftermarket units are an inexpensive install at any hitch shop in Colorado Springs. Once it's in, it works for every braked trailer you'll ever tow.
